Please, introduce yourself, tell us a little bit about you.
hi , im tomas spicolli , born in campana ,arghhhentina , 42 years ago.
im a multimedia artist focusing my work on curiosity as my main interest in life.
Recent, current or future projects you are involved in that you would like to share with us?
future-now :im in a state of constant evolution , and that means , im always doing something , mostly i put my time in projects that are a convination of all things that interest me , graphic art, cinema ,photografy, noisemusic ,etc.
i take part in TILDAFLIPERS and SSS,wich are two proyects involving music and visual arts , with several records, videos, short films, books and fanzines out over the last 10 years.
i been publishing the fanzine ESCENA OBSCENA for the last 5 years or so,with interviews and stuff from other artists and usually publish other smaller zines with my own stuff , many to mention….
What kind of things do influence your work?
all things are an influence , words that i hear on the street , a face in a reflection as i walk by in some lonely street , i tend to be affected by the simplest things in life and try to represent that feelling…
How is your normal process of collaging? (idea or commission, where do you get your materials or find your images, which is your cutting technique, best way you have found to paste, where do you work and how, and very important: what do you do with your scraps)
im constantly picking stuff , and carry a collection of scraps, cuts and pieces of paper from place to place , even when i dont even have a house or a place to live on my own , i always have a bag of cutpaper to work with.i love papaer, its texture and smell in convination with ink are sublime to me.
i use anything i can get my hands on, techniques and materials are irrelevant to me,i had always consider technique as a trap, a place of refuge for minds without ideas.
as i say before , if i have a place to work , it will be a long table , paper, a cutter ,some sissor and glue,a pair of brushes, maybe some tape, and thats it , but mostly i dont have a place, as im a natural nomad , for some periods of time i do enjoy the luxury of a working space, and tend to do bigger pieces , but for the most time, i work on my notebooks, wich are for the most part , the most consistent pieces of work i did in my life and have many dozens of em and still keep on pilling up….
Which is your latest discovery in the collage world?
collage is as old as is new , wich means, as a technique , its been going on forever…
as any other trend in life or the “artworld” , its gonna get used and throw away until somebody sometime again think its cool to do that…i been doing it forever since i was a kid, in school, at home, doing fanzines, flyers for shows, etc…i also draw and paint a lot , and mostly i convine all techniques available to me…if i have to think about people who i admire doing collage i must have to go first to john heartfield , g – baucher of the band “crass” , and people like robert williams who took the collage technique and translated to painting long time ago….also im deeply affected by people like bryon gyssin…
What advice can you give to a collage beginner?
work and then keep on working.
What do say your friends/family about your collage work?
i try not to boring my friends with what i do, id ratter be a better listener and love to hear stories. i think a good piece of work should speak for itself. also im a published artist, wich means, if anyone is interested, theres places to look at what i do.
And, what do you do when you are not working on art?
sleeping.
Would you like to ask anything to John Baldessari? Shoot
somebody showed me some documentary about this guy many years ago, but i dont even remember what it was about…i will have to look up to it to answer this question, and i dont think its gonna happen…
