Berlin-based artist Natalie Huth has a background in design and illustration, but her work now focuses on combining drawing and collage. Sourcing material from vintage magazines and books, as well as using found photographs, she avoids the “nostalgic or historic”. Instead, her compositions focus on the atmosphere of the forgotten. “These images from the past – familiar and unfamiliar at the same time – exude a mysteriousness that captivates me”, she notes. Faces and features are often covered in her work, either by hands or layers of cut-up material. These are narrative works about the layers beneath the surface or, as she puts it, the “hidden abysses”. Huth explains, “I create tragedies that can be absurd, poetic, surreal, disquieting or simply weird”. These small-scale, hand-cut works are often black and white or sepia, resembling scenes from the ghostly, uncanny heart of humanity.
