Artist: Sébastien Bayet
Self-taught artist Sébastien Bayet’s paintings have spanned religious portraiture, views of famous artists’ studios, and vanitas scenes in which he replaces figures with skeletons. Bayet revels in materiality, often creating the grounds for his paintings from collaged fabrics. His vanitas works have appropriated compositions from masters such as Francisco de Goya, Édouard Manet, and Diego Velásquez. For his recent series “Memoire d’Atelier,” Bayet reflects on his dual residency in Reims, France, and coastal Madagascar. He composes the paintings on scraps of sail fabric that he buys from local Vezo fishermen in Madagascar. On these material fragments, Bayet paints views of his studio in France. (from editor)
