Please, introduce yourself, tell us a little bit about you.
We’re Markus and Reto Huber and we’re twin brothers. We studied Arts at the Zurich University of the Arts (HGKZ). We have worked together since 2005 under the name huber.huber. Our work is focused on different kinds of media, from collages and drawings to photographs, objects and installations.
In 2011 we released our book „Universen“, which was a very important platform for our collages.
Recent, current or future projects you are involved in that you would like to share with us?
Right now we are working on a new project and a collection of works named „Umkristallisation“. As we work in bigger dimensions than earlier, the collages are getting bigger as well.
In 2014 we will release a new publication.
What kind of things do influence your work?
Our main topics deal with the ambivalent relation between civilisation and nature. This means we take on topical and social questions; hopes, fears, faith and the failure of humanity and thus they become the central subject. We get the inspiration for our works from activities of humanity which can partly come in absurd shapes and forms.
How is your normal process of collaging? (idea or commission, where do you get your materials or find your images, which is your cutting technique, best way you have found to paste, where do you work and how, and very important: what do you do with your scraps)
We mostly work in bigger work-groups; which means we first compose a concept in form and content. Then we search through our stock to find proper themes and pictures, but often we buy additional books and magazines through the internet or at flee markets.
Wich is your latest discovery in the collage world? What advice can you give to a collage beginner?
We recently re-discovered the collages of Cy Twombly and they are awesome!
For a beginner in collage work we would recommend to get a really good glue.
What do say your friends/family about your collage work? And, what do you do when you are not working on art?
Our first collages, which we created eight years ago, were recieved by many of our friends and family members as too dark and cheerless. Today there is sometimes a little light coming through…
When we are not working in the atelier, we read a lot, we meet friends, we travel and love to cook.
